Jobs, establishments and pay: annual averages for private manufacturing (NAICS 31-33). LQ is the location quotient: a state's share of jobs in manufacturing divided by the U.S. share (above 1.0 means more concentrated than the nation). YoY is the change in jobs from the prior year. “Withheld” means BLS suppresses the figure to protect confidentiality. “In directory” counts the manufacturers the Noramark directory lists in the state (“under 10” when it lists fewer). The U.S. totals cover the 50 states and D.C.; Puerto Rico is published separately, so it has no share of them. Sources: U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics, Quarterly Census of Employment and Wages, 2024 annual averages; U.S. Census Bureau, 2023 County Business Patterns.

Frequently asked questions

Which state has the most manufacturing jobs?
By private manufacturing employment in 2024, the largest are California, Texas, Ohio, Michigan and Illinois. By concentration (the location quotient: the share of a state's jobs that are in manufacturing, relative to the U.S. share) the highest are Indiana (2.00), Wisconsin (1.92), Iowa (1.73), Michigan (1.66) and Alabama (1.65).
Where do these numbers come from?
Employment, establishments, pay, the location quotient and the year-over-year change come from the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics Quarterly Census of Employment and Wages (annual averages, private ownership, NAICS 31-33). The Census Bureau County Business Patterns totals are shown on each state page. Noramark keeps every downloaded file with its checksum and retrieval date.
Why do the BLS and Census counts differ?
QCEW counts establishments and jobs covered by unemployment insurance, averaged over the year. County Business Patterns, from the Census Business Register, counts establishments that had paid employees at any time during the year; only its employment figure is for a single pay period, the one including March 12. Different coverage and timing give different totals, both valid for their purpose.
