Why Don't We All Just Use INSTANT QUOTING?!?!

Everything above implies that latency is a huge issue. It is. So why not just turn to an instant quoting system?
My bottom line: they only fix a specific slice of manufacturing demand — clean inputs, well-bounded processes, and decisions that can be made without a human doing deep interpretation. They're also often coupled with anonymous shop lock-in. They don't really solve the problems described above. They move them around.
Start with the geometry. The Instant Quoting Engine is built around uploading 3D CAD models for instant pricing and lead times. Drawings can be attached, but the "instant" part is driven by the model and the selected options, not by a human reading every note, every datum scheme, and every implied inspection plan. That model has to be right, and the platform will hold you to it. If you send that same rigor of a model to any shop, you'll get a fast quote there too.
A lot of work isn't actually instant-quotable in the first place. Some processes are explicitly handled on longer cycles — injection molding, for instance, is called out as manually quoted in 24–48 hours on the guide for one of the biggest instant quoters, who shall remain unnamed. High-volume, complex, or ambiguous packages tend to pull humans in regardless.
There's also still an engineering gate after you click buy. Several of the instant quoters describe a post-order review by their engineers, followed by assignment to a manufacturing partner. That's useful, but it means the "quote" is not the same thing as a shop owner reading your whole packet and owning the assumptions end-to-end from day one. Accountability shifts and communication drops.
Plenty of buyers want supplier determinism rather than network assignment. For programs that care about repeatability, traceability, PPAP-style expectations, or "same supplier, same process window," buyers generally prefer a direct supplier relationship where they control the exact shop, the exact inspection approach, and the escalation path.
Compliance and data handling narrow the field further. The big instant shops do support things like ITAR-related restrictions, maintain ITAR-registered quality labs, and publish their security posture, including references to CMMC Level 2. That helps. Many OEMs still have internal policies that push them toward direct NDAs, approved vendor lists, and tightly controlled technical data flow anyway.
Offshore routing is frequently bundled into the speed-and-price promise. Instant quote networks include global sourcing options and "economy" style levers that reduce cost or shift lead time, which is attractive the moment the objective function becomes "get a part moving now." It's also exactly why some teams avoid these platforms entirely when domestic-only sourcing or IP protection is non-negotiable — quality, IP, and shipping issues add up fast.
Then there's unit economics. For larger repeat buys, buyers want price breaks, capacity reservations, tooling amortization logic, and negotiated change-order rules. Market-style quoting is great for fast procurement. It isn't always the cheapest or the most controllable path for sustained production.
Net: instant quoting is genuinely useful for prototypes and for a lot of bounded parts. It does not eliminate the ambiguity, qualification, and accountability problems across the whole network. It routes around them when it can, and when it can't, humans and policy show up again.
